For the love of it

The other day, we didn’t have enough wallpaper. Looking back at the notes I took during my initial site visit, I had written down a number that was 6” shy of what the wall actually was. That was a first. That has never happened before, after hundreds of estimates. I also had not had the clients order any additional wallpaper than what I thought I needed because I was so confident that it seemed like overkill to order more.

So there we were, less than a foot shy of reaching the end of the wall. It was go time! The wallpaper was a non woven material, sturdy but thin. I found three 30” pieces that all had the continuous pattern on them, but they didn’t all have matching factory edges. Next came the art and magic of wallpaper hanging. One by one, I patched in the rest of the wallpaper, double-cutting with twists and turns to follow the motifs, and creating the most seamless illusion.

The drawing above is a quick blind contour drawing that I made from my memory of these tense, no-mistakes-allowed moments. Mike says it looks like I’m praying. He’s not wrong.
